Role in the Community

Evening at a homestead

Meetings of the Murchison LCDC are generally well attended by up to 30 people with the majority of pastoral stations represented. It is a forum where each station, together with representatives from local government and government agencies, can discuss specific issues of landcare such as erosion, control of feral animals and pests and weeds, as well as the bigger issues of catchment management, sustainable production and ecological sustainability.

Family units are involved with husband and wife generally attending meetings together. The meetings are held either at a station, where members can look at some practical landcare issues, or at the Murchison Settlement.

The interaction between pastoralists and government agencies is important and has led to on-going good relationships, particularly with the Department of Agriculture in Meekatharra. The LCDC has also always worked very closely with the Shire of Murchison who has been supportive in every project and provides administrative facilities.

The LCDC also seeks to educate the wider community in aspects of pastoral landcare. We are working towards this with a Landcare Rotunda with signs giving local information, and a Botanical Walk at the Murchison Settlement describing the role of landscape and plants.
